If this is your first time creating a production plan, or your 100th, you need to understand the basics of what it is a Line Producer and/or UPM do.  It's not all hanging out on the set with the crew, nor is it all paper-pushing at a desk.  It's a delicate balance of each, with a dose of accounting and therapist mixed in for added enjoyment.  This is not the sort of job too many people find themselves 'wanting' to be, but for the select few who find the challenges this positions brings (dare I say) "enjoyable" - it is just that.

 

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A LINE PRODUCER?

You need to be great at math, a clear headed forward thinker who is able to see multiple paths almost instantly, which keeping in mind the mounting issues of taking each route.  You need to politically balance your desire to do the right thing, with the economic business of filmmaking.  It's not easy, and you'll make more people mad at you than you'll ever want, however, in the end - if you treat people with respect and earn their trust, they will follow you from project to project.
